3 Tips For Writing a Memorable Speech

tips & techniques writing Jan 08, 2025

When it comes to crafting a speech that leaves a lasting impact, personal experiences are your secret weapon. Stories rooted in your own life are authentic, relatable, and will resonate with your audiences. Here are three simple tips to help you turn your experiences into an unforgettable speech.

1. Start with a Thought-Provoking Statement or Question Your opening sets the stage for everything that follows. Dive right in with a bold statement or question that grabs your audience’s attention. For example, a client once began their speech with, "They told me I was stupid." This stark, emotional statement immediately captivated the room and made people curious about what came next.

Think about a moment in your story that is shocking, inspiring, or challenges expectations, and use it to spark curiosity from the very first sentence.

2. Start with the End in Mind What is the one thing you want your audience to take away? Is it a lesson, an idea, or a call to action? Build your speech around that central point and make sure every story, anecdote, or reflection serves it.

For example, if you want your audience to walk away believing that resilience can overcome any obstacle, choose personal stories that illustrate that theme. Structuring your speech with the conclusion in mind ensures your message is focused and impactful.

3. Highlight Emotional Turning Points The most memorable speeches are not just about what happened—they illustrate how it made you feel and how it changed you. Share the highs and lows of your story, emphasizing moments of realization, triumph, or growth.

For instance, if you are talking about a career failure that eventually led to success, describe the initial disappointment vividly:

"I sat in my car for hours, staring at the rejection letter, wondering if or how I would ever make it…"

Then contrast it with the breakthrough moment that followed. This emotional journey draws listeners in and helps them connect with your experience.

“…and then I realized that this rejection was the push I needed to follow my dreams of starting my own business.”

Your experiences are powerful. By starting with a thought-provoking opening, focusing on your core message, and leaning into emotional turning points, you can create a speech that not only engages but inspires your audience to see the world differently.
