Have you ever felt a pang of anxiety at the thought of speaking in front of a crowd? Or maybe you've heard some "advice" that made public speaking seem even more daunting? If you’re nodding your head in agreement, you are not alone.
Public speaking can be intimidating, but it's also an incredible opportunity to make an impact and share your message with the world. With all the advice, how-to info, and other ideas about how you should approach the stage to speak, it can be easy to feel like you are unqualified to speak or present to an audience.
I believe that every single one of us has a story, a message, and a lesson to share with the world. I want you to feel empowered and inspired to take the stage so today, I am setting the record straight and debunking some common myths about public speaking that might be holding you back.
Myth 1: Public Speaking is an Innate Talent
Reality: This is a pervasive myth. The truth is, public speaking is a skill that can be learned, not a talent you're born with. That’s not to say that some people aren’t naturally captivating speakers. Just like learning to play an instrument or mastering a new language, public speaking takes practice, coaching, and a whole lot of dedication. If you are committed to honing your speaking skills, you can be a rockstar speaker. Don't count yourself out just because you're not a "natural."
Myth 2: The Audience is Your Enemy
Reality: Your audience is not there to scrutinize your every word and gesture. In fact, they are the reason you are there and they're rooting for you! Your audience wants to see you succeed and is genuinely interested in what you have to say. Take a deep breath and speak from the heart.
Myth 3: A Good Speaker Never Gets Nervous
Reality: Even the most seasoned speakers get butterflies before hitting the stage. Nervousness is completely normal and, believe it or not, can enhance your performance if channeled correctly. The key is to manage that energy in a way that boosts your presence, rather than detracts from it. Remember, the brain doesn’t know the difference between nerves and excitement, it is only your perception that tells your brain how to feel. Once you master your nerves and teach your brain to view them as positive instead of negative, you will be a master on the stage!!
Myth 4: Memorizing Your Speech is the Best Approach
Reality: While it's crucial to know your material inside and out, memorizing your speech word-for-word can make you sound robotic and inauthentic. Not to mention it is hard to memorize a 45-minute speech and even harder to keep it straight when dealing with the nerves of being on stage. Instead, figure out what works for you and stick with that! Use cue cards or a printed version of your speech to keep you on track. If you have access to a teleprompter, use that…after all, even the president of the United States uses a teleprompter!
Myth 5: Visuals are Unnecessary if You're a Good Speaker
Reality: Visual aids like slides or props can be incredibly effective in enhancing your message, regardless of how seasoned of a speaker you are. They add emphasis and can increase audience engagement and understanding of your material. If you want to include visuals in your presentation, you absolutely should do that! Ensure that the visuals complement and align with your words and then rock the stage both verbally and visually!
There you have it: five myths about public speaking that you can confidently toss out the window! Remember, public speaking is not about perfection; it's about connection. It is about sharing your message in a way that resonates with others and leaves a lasting impact. And guess what? You have what it takes to be a phenomenal public speaker!
