I remember the first time, and even the most recent time, I stood on a stage to share my story. My hands were trembling, my heart raced, and that pesky voice inside my head questioned if anyone in the audience would care about what I had to say. But as I told that voice to hush and go sit in the corner and I began to speak, something magical happened. I saw nods of understanding, felt the energy of connection, and again realized the profound power of personal storytelling.
Stories are the threads that weave us together. They have been for centuries, carrying lessons, emotions, history, and humanity from one generation to the next. Today, as speakers and storytellers, we continue this tradition. When we step onto a stage, whether literal or metaphorical, we invite others into our lives, offering them a glimpse of who we are and what we stand for. We also offer them hope and the chance to see a new perspective on their own experiences.
I meet women all the time who are hesitant to share their stories because they believe they aren’t big or bad enough to matter. One recent conversation let to a prospective client having a deep realization about an experience she had and the guilt she carried with it for over 20 years. Through sharing her story with me, I was able to help her see the perspective she had been missing and I she was able to share with me her passion and reason for doing what she does.
This is the beauty of storytelling: it doesn’t have to be grand to be impactful. The moments that shape us—a lesson learned, a challenge overcome, a small act of kindness—are often the ones that resonate most deeply with others. When we share these stories, we create connections that transcend background, culture, and experience.
When I craft a story, I always begin deciding what message I want to convey. What is the heart of the lesson? For me, one of the most powerful lessons has been resilience. I often recount the challenges I faced in my 20’s, navigating single motherhood while balancing work and dreams of a brighter future. It wasn’t easy, but those struggles taught me perseverance and the importance of leaning into my unique voice.
Once I have the idea for the key takeaway, I dig into my experiences. Sometimes, I reflect on pivotal moments: the times I felt like giving up but didn’t, or the people who inspired me to keep going. Other times, I look for lessons in the quiet, everyday experiences that shape who we are. I remember the joy of watching my daughter make friendship bracelets, her focus reminding me of the importance of patience and creativity; or my son building Legos, his attention to detail reminding me to acknowledge the small things. These stories hold universal truths that many people can relate to.
As I share my stories, I always try to engage the audience’s emotions. Stories aren’t just told; they are felt. Audiences won’t remember every word we say but they will remember how we make them feel. I want listeners to see the world I saw, feel the weight of my struggles, and celebrate the triumphs with me. It is the sensory details—the sound of laughter, the smell of fresh rain, the warmth of a hand on my shoulder—that make stories vivid and memorable.
But storytelling is not just about the storyteller; it is about the audience. I often ask myself, “How does this story serve those that will hear (or read) it?” My goal is always to inspire, empower, or spark reflection. When I tell a story of resilience, I hope my listeners leave feeling a little braver in facing their own challenges. When I share a lesson about connection, I hope they’re reminded of the importance of relationships in their lives.
The real magic of storytelling lies in its ability to inspire action. I’ll never forget the people who have approached me after a speech to say that my story either inspired them or made them feel a certain way. Moments like these remind me that our stories are not just ours; they belong to the people who need to hear them. Our stories are a gift, and it is our responsibility to share that gift.
