AUDIENCE ENGAGEMENT: HOW TO CONNECT AND KEEP THEM HOOKED

Uncategorized Nov 28, 2023

You have a story and a strong desire to share it. But how do you get from where you are to where you want to be? The path to the stage is often shadowed by self-doubt, nerves, anxiety, and overwhelm. You know you can share your story, but are you going to be able to connect with the audience, be understood in the right way, and leave a lasting impression?

The short answer is yes, but it is not a quick answer. It takes patience, practice, time, and guidance to get to the stage. Your fear of not being good enough is real, but it shouldn’t hold you back from taking the steps to the spotlight. If you have that desire to create a story that will captivate and inspire your audience, keep reading!

Communicating and connecting with your audience is an art. It goes beyond mere engagement and involves preparation on your part to ensure you can create a bond or shared experience that will last long after you've left the stage. Being a captivating speaker means you are capable, relatable, vulnerable, and memorable.

When your desire to share your story first starts, you may not know how to be any of those things. Today, I am sharing a few ways you can get started on your path to captivating storyteller!

    1. KNOW your audience: Figure out what the audience needs from you. What are their interests, their values, and their beliefs? Do those interests, values, and beliefs align with yours. Can you speak on a topic and in a way that will resonate with them? Shape your message to touch their lives personally.
    2. Narrate with Heart: Stories are the universal language of connection. Humans connect through shared experiences and stories. Sharing your own experiences and anecdotes allows you to be vulnerable and relatable to your audience. Speak from your heart and you are sure to have an impact!
    3. Embrace Vulnerability: Authenticity creates connection. Don’t be afraid to show emotion, embrace it and use it to take the audience on a journey with you. When you share your own experiences, including the ups and downs, you become more than “a speaker on the stage,” you become memorable and create a bond with those listening to you.
    4. Master the Art of Silence: Silence is golden, don’t be afraid to use it. Strategic pauses can underscore your point and give your audience a moment to absorb your message. It can also give you a few seconds to regroup, breathe, and refocus if you lose your train of thought. Don’t be afraid to let silence linger for a few seconds. It is a powerful tool in building excitement and engagement in your audience!
    5. Interactive Engagement: Remember that giving a speech is an act in dialogue. It is not a monologue. Although your audience may not verbally take part in the dialogue, their emotional responses and non-verbal engagement create the other side of the conversation. Use stirring questions and impactful statements that provoke thought and invite your audience into that conversation.

Your path to becoming a speaker who doesn't just speak but actively connects with the audience is both unique and essential. You will undoubtedly wonder if your story is “good enough” to keep people interested. I assure you that it is and that with some expert guidance, practice, and belief in yourself, you can have a lasting impact. Embrace your fears, leverage your strengths, and let your voice resonate. The world awaits your story.
