NERVOUS TO NOTEWORTHY: BODY LANGUAGE BASICS FOR CONFIDENT STAGE PRESENCE

Uncategorized Nov 21, 2023

You have a story that the world needs to hear, and I know that sometimes, the only thing standing between you and the stage is your lack of confidence – not just in what you will say, but in how you will say it. Today, let's explore how your body language can support your mission on the stage and speak volumes before you even utter a word.

The Power of Non-Verbal Communication

Did you know that over half of the information you convey on stage is non-verbal? That's right, your posture, gestures, and even your facial expressions can tell your audience a great deal about you, your confidence, and your credibility. Embracing this power can transform your presence on stage.

Understanding non-verbal cues and using them to your benefit can have a profound impact on the way you are perceived on stage. A simple smile as you walk out from behind the curtain can set the entire tone of what happens next. The way you walk, the level at which you look across the room (eyes up or down), and your facial expressions will convey information within seconds – make those seconds count and be confident that your body language is sending the right message!

Key Components of Confident Body Language

  1. Posture: Stand tall, keep your shoulders back and relaxed, and keep your head held high with your chin parallel to the floor. This posture tells the audience that you are confident and ready to make an impact with your words!
  2. Eye Contact: Looking at your audience creates a connection. It says, "I am here, I am confident, and my message matters." The best part is that you don’t have to specifically look them in the eyes! If you are looking out on a large group, you can simply look to the back of the room or look at someone’s forehead! This gives you a larger place to focus your eyes so you’re not searching for eyeballs, and it gives the impression that you are actively connecting to your audience!
  3. Gestures: Use your hands to emphasize points. Let your passion show through your movements. Don’t be afraid to engage your body in the process of presenting your message!
  4. Facial Expressions: Smile, not just with your mouth, but with your eyes. A simple smile helps break the ice, puts you at ease, and shows the audience that you are relatable and approachable.
  5. Space and Movement: Command the space you are given. Utilize the stage, regardless of its size. Purposeful movement can emphasize your message and keep your audience engaged.

Now that we have discussed some of the great ways you can use your body to enhance your speaking performance, let’s discuss some of the common body language mistakes and why you should avoid them. Remember, your body language should reinforce your words, not contradict them.

Common Body Language Mistakes to Avoid

  1. Crossed arms or hands behind your back: These can create a barrier between you and your audience. Folded arms give the message that you are nervous or closed off. You want to be open and invite your audience to listen to you.
  2. Fidgeting or swaying: It’s natural to want to do something with your hands. If you find that you are a fidgeter, hold something as you speak. This can be cue-cards, the microphone, a clicker to move your slides, or even a small trinket that won’t distract the audience.
  3. Staring at the floor: Looking down for long periods of time when speaking gives the impression that you are scared, unprepared, or disinterested in being there. I promise you the floor isn’t going anywhere, it will be there to support you, even if you’re not looking at it. The same goes for your notes. If you have a printed speech, be sure to look up from it and check in with the audience at least once per paragraph.

Now that we have discussed different ways to use your body it is time to start incorporating them into your speech practice. The good news is that it is easier than ever to record yourself so you can see what you are doing. Using a smart phone, tablet, or webcam, record yourself presenting. If you don’t have a speech prepared, you can grab something handy and read it. The goal here is to record yourself speaking and then watch it back.

Notice how your body language aligns with your words (or maybe how it doesn’t align with them…). Look for the common mistakes we discussed that can detract or distract from your intended message. Seek feedback from trusted friends or a coach. You can also find recordings of other speakers and see how they use body language to contribute to their message!

Your journey to the stage is not just about perfecting your story; it's also about how you present it. Your body language is a powerful tool in conveying your message with confidence and impact. With a little practice, a little guidance, and a little trust in yourself, you can be a captivating speaker with a message that impacts everyone in attendance!
