CREDIBILITY THROUGH COMMUNICATION

Uncategorized Mar 14, 2023

If you have been around here for a minute, you have probably heard me talk about the 5 Cs of communication. (If you are new here, you can learn more HERE)

One of those Cs is Credibility, and it is one of the most important traits for you to develop as a business owner.

Credibility is simply the quality of being believable and trustworthy. As a specialist in your chosen field of business, it is of utmost importance that you ARE knowledgeable and worthy of the trust of your clients.

But how do you develop that quality?

Through communication.

Effective communication is an essential aspect of building credibility. When you are credible, people are more likely to respect you, listen to you, and utilize your services.

Whether you are communicating in person, face to face, virtually, or on social media, there are several ways to build credibility through your communication.

Here are my four favorite ways to do so:

  1. Be honest. Tell the truth, always. People appreciate honesty and transparency. If you want to build credibility, be truthful and straightforward with your audience. Do not exaggerate or withhold information, and if there is an issue with a client or their transaction, communicate that issue as soon as possible so you can maintain your credibility with them.
  2. Show empathy. Be an active listener, try to understand where the other party is coming from, how they feel, and internalize what they are saying. When you communicate with others, make an effort to understand their perspective. Showing empathy and listening to others' concerns shows that you care about them as a person, not just as a customer.
  3. Be consistent: Consistency is another of the 5 Cs of communication and it is key when it comes to building your credibility. Whether you are following up on promises you have made or consistently delivering quality work, showing a pattern of reliability bolsters your credibility. Establishing credibility is the easy part, maintaining it takes more work – that is where consistency comes into play.
  4. Be knowledgeable: You are a professional, an expert. People trust and respect those who have expertise in their field. If you want to build credibility, make an intentional effort to keep learning and developing your knowledge and skills. There is always more to learn, and the minute you stop seeking new knowledge, you become obsolete. Don’t let your credibility wane simply because you decided to stop learning and improving your skills!

Building your credibility through your communication is crucial for success in your professional relationships. By using these tips to build your credibility, you set yourself up for success as a trusted leader and true professional in your industry!
