From Anxious to Empowered

For many of us, the idea of stepping onto a stage can be terrifying. The sweaty palms, racing heart, and shaky voice often feel like insurmountable obstacles. But what if I told you that these symptoms of anxiety could be transformed into powerful tools for an impactful performance?

Stage nerves are not your enemy—they are a sign that you care. Instead of letting them control you, you can learn to harness that energy to enhance your confidence and delivery.

Here is a step-by-step guide to turning your anxiety into empowered energy.

  1. Acknowledge and Accept Your Nerves

The first step in managing stage fright is recognizing it for what it is: a natural response to a challenge. Nervousness isn’t a sign of weakness; it’s a signal that you’re stepping out of your comfort zone.

  • Action: Take a moment to acknowledge your feelings without judgment. Remind yourself that even seasoned speakers feel nervous before taking the stage.
  • Mantra: “This energy means I care about doing my best. I am excited to share my message with the audience.”

  1. Reframe Nervous Energy as Excitement

Physiologically, nervousness and excitement are the same. Your body doesn’t know the difference—only your mind does. By reframing your anxiety as excitement, you can shift your perspective and channel that energy positively, then allowing your body to perceive and utilize the energy differently.

  • Action: Before stepping on stage, say out loud, “I’m not nervous; I’m excited!” This simple reframe can change how you interpret those physical sensations.

  1. Prepare Thoroughly

Confidence comes from knowing your material and practicing your performance. The more prepared you are, the less room there is for doubt.

  • Action: Practice your speech out loud multiple times. Record yourself and review it to identify areas for improvement. If possible, rehearse in the same setting where you will deliver your speech.
  • Bonus Tip: Practice in front of a friend or mentor to get constructive feedback - record your practice and their feedback.

  1. Develop a Pre-Speech Routine

Having a consistent routine before stepping on stage can help calm your nerves and signal to your brain that you’re ready.

  • Action: Create a ritual that works for you. This could include deep breathing exercises, light stretches, or listening to an empowering song.
  • Example: Try box breathing: inhale for 4 counts, hold for 8 counts with no tension in the neck or throat, then exhale for 4 counts, and hold at the bottom of the exhale with no tension for 8 counts. Repeat this cycle up to three times to calm your mind and body. (The first few times you do this, you may be lightheaded - have a chair nearby but do the exercise standing up to allow for maximum lung expansion)

  1. Visualize Success

Visualization is a powerful tool used by athletes, performers, and speakers alike. By imagining a successful outcome, you can reduce anxiety and build confidence.

  • Action: Close your eyes and picture yourself on stage. Imagine the audience engaged, nodding, and applauding. Feel the sense of pride and accomplishment as you finish strong.

  1. Focus on Connection, Not Perfection

Your audience isn’t looking for a flawless performance—they’re looking for someone who is genuine and relatable. Shift your focus from impressing them to connecting with them.

  • Action: Before your speech, think about one person in the audience who needs to hear your message. Speak as if you’re having a conversation with them.
  • Mantra: “It’s about connection, not perfection.”

  1. Embrace Imperfections as Part of the Journey

Mistakes happen, even to the best speakers. Instead of fearing them, embrace them as opportunities to show resilience and authenticity.

  • Action: If you stumble over your words, take a breath, smile, and continue. Your audience will appreciate your humanness, your composure, and your grace.

  1. Reflect and Celebrate

After your speech, take time to reflect on what went well and what you can improve for next time. Celebrate your bravery for stepping onto the stage—that alone is a huge accomplishment.

  • Action: Write down three things you’re proud of from your performance. Acknowledge your growth and use it as motivation for your next speaking opportunity.

Transforming stage nerves into speaking strength is a process, and it takes timed. With practice, patience, and a mindset shift, you can learn to embrace the energy that comes with nervousness and use it to your advantage. Remember, the goal isn’t to eliminate anxiety—it’s to work with it.

Your voice is powerful, and the world is waiting to hear it. Take the stage with courage and confidence and let your unique story shine.
