The start of a new year is the perfect time to reflect on where you’ve been and chart a bold course for where you want to go. For those of us who dream of stepping onto the stage and sharing our stories, 2025 holds unlimited potential. But how do you turn that dream into reality?
The answer lies in setting clear, purposeful goals.
If the idea of public speaking excites you but also feels daunting, you’re not alone. Many people hesitate because of nerves, fear of judgment, or simply not knowing where to begin. The good news is that by setting thoughtful goals, you can break through these barriers and step into the spotlight with confidence and clarity.
Building your speaking skills and your confidence has benefits in every aspect of your life. Even if you don’t dream of inspiring the masses from the stage, you can still make an impact in your own life and the lives of those around you by learning how to verbalize your stories, present information with confidence, and speak efficiently!
Here are five steps to help you set and achieve speaking goals that will propel you forward this year:
Before you set any goals, take a moment to dream. Where do you see yourself by the end of 2025? Maybe you’re sharing your story at a conference, leading a workshop in your field, or simply speaking up more confidently in meetings.
Write down your vision; be specific. For example:
• “By December 2025, I will deliver a keynote speech at a local women’s empowerment event.”
• “I will share my personal story on three podcasts this year.”
Visualization turns your abstract desire into a tangible target, giving you a clearer sense of direction and the ability to plan out what needs to be done to reach it!
Confident speaking is a skill, and like any skill, it is developed over time through practice. Set incremental goals to build your confidence and experience over time. Here are a few examples:
• Short-Term Goal: Join a speaking group or take a public speaking workshop by March. (I offer both! Book a FREE call with me to learn more!)
• Medium-Term Goal: Commit to one small speaking opportunity each quarter, such as sponsoring a local networking where you can speak for a few minutes, emceeing an event, or participating in a panel discussion.
• Long-Term Goal: Prepare and deliver a 20-minute talk by year’s end. (I also have options for you to do this! Book that free call and let’s chat!)
Breaking your goals into smaller milestones ensures steady progress while keeping your ultimate vision in sight.
Your story is your most powerful speaking asset. Reflect on the moments in your life that shaped you, the challenges you’ve overcome, and the lessons you’ve learned. These experiences are what make your voice unique.
Set a goal to craft your personal narrative. For example:
• Write a 5-minute story about a pivotal moment in your life.
• Practice telling this story to a trusted friend or mentor. (Ahem…that’s me!)
As you refine your story, you’ll find it easier to connect with audiences authentically.
When setting goals, follow the SMART framework: Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound. For instance:
• Instead of saying, “I want to be a better speaker,” say, “I will attend three public speaking events and deliver one speech by June 2025.”
• I will participate in one long-term coaching or training program by September 2025. (Again, this is what I do, book that free call and let’s see if my programs are right for you!)
Measurable goals give you a clear sense of progress and achievement, keeping you motivated throughout the year.
Every step you take toward your speaking goals is worth celebrating. Whether it’s attending your first workshop, completing a story draft, or conquering a case of imposter syndrome and nerves before stepping on stage, each milestone is proof of your growth.
Set a reward for achieving your goals. It could be something simple, like treating yourself to a new journal for storytelling or attending an inspiring event as a spectator.
Recognizing your progress keeps you energized and excited about the journey.
