Her Story, Your Story

There is something magical about hearing a woman tell her story—not just the polished parts, but the raw, real, and vulnerable moments that have shaped who she is. Stories have the power to connect us, inspire us, and remind us of what we’re capable of achieving. And when women share their stories, they don’t just speak for themselves; they speak for those who have walked similar paths and for those who are still finding their way.

I’ve had the privilege of working with incredible women who have used their voices to inspire change and growth - not just in their audiences, but within themselves. Each of them started from a place of uncertainty, often feeling like their stories weren’t enough. But with courage and conviction, they stepped forward, and their journeys have become a beacon for others.

I often think about one of my clients, who is now a dear friend, and the journey she has been on. When we first met and started working together, she felt scattered. Like she had everything and nothing to share. She also felt like she needed to share her story, but she had no idea which parts. Through our time together I was able to guide her to her story. She did the work, I just kept her on the path to get there. Since her debut speech in March 2023, she has gone on to emcee events, create new brands, and speak at the places she once only dreamed of. She is inspiring others and herself every single day by being brave enough to be vulnerable and share her story along the way.

Another woman I worked with had spent decades feeling invisible in her career and relationships, convinced that her voice didn’t matter. When she began working on her story, she unearthed a moment from her childhood that had shaped her beliefs about speaking up (ahem, "children should be seen and not heard" ring a bell for anyone?). Sharing that story became a turning point for her and finally, in her 60’s, she discovered the power of her voice. She didn’t just captivate her audience; she empowered them to confront their own fears of being overlooked.

When I began my own speaking journey, I often felt unsure about the value of my story. I wasn’t a celebrity or a trailblazer in the traditional sense. I'm just an ordinary gal, an introvert, a little bit weird, and a whole lot of determined. I knew what it was like to struggle, to persevere, and to dream of something more. Over time, I realized that my story—the unvarnished truth of my experiences—was what audiences connected with the most. I realized that my story wasn’t just mine anymore—it belonged to everyone who heard it and found strength in my words.

The lessons I’ve learned from my clients and my experiences are clear: sharing your story is an act of courage, but it’s also a gift. It’s a gift to the audience, who will see themselves in your words, and it’s a gift to yourself, as you claim the power of your voice. And with the blessing of that gift comes the responsibility to share it.

If you’re holding back, wondering if your story is enough, I want to remind you that it is. It doesn’t need to be dramatic or groundbreaking to have value. The simple act of telling it with honesty and heart is enough to inspire others. As Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie so beautifully said, “Stories have been used to dispossess and to malign. But stories can also be used to empower, and to humanize.”

Your story matters because you matter. Whether you’ve overcome obstacles, found joy in unexpected places, or simply lived a life filled with quiet moments of resilience, your voice has the power to change lives. If you're feeling weighed down by the burden of your story, I encourage you to share it. Great healing and growth come in the form of sharing our truths. Much like a casket is carried by many, when you share your story with an audience, the weight of the load becomes lighter, and you become free of the burden.

As we celebrate the growth that comes from stepping outside our comfort zones, I encourage you to take the first step toward acknowledging, crafting, and sharing your story. Reflect on the moments that have shaped you and start building the story you’ve been waiting to tell. The stage is waiting, and so is your audience.
