Here we are, at the beginning of another year! Can you believe it?
If you celebrated holidays in the past few weeks, I hope you were able to fully enjoy them and have some time to rest, recharge, and rejuvenate yourself!
Looking forward to the new year, I must know, do you make resolutions?
I don’t really believe in resolutions anymore. To me, resolutions are simply statements of something you would like to do or have happen, but they aren’t backed by any kind of plan. Instead, I like to make goals. Goals should have a plan with them so you can see the path to reach them.
A typical New Year’s resolution could be “I want to lose weight.” But without a plan, that resolution will never come to fruition. Weight loss might be the most common resolution set at the first of a new year. But how many of us fizzle out by the second week of January? Generally, I’d guess this is because there is no plan - no actionable steps detailed that will be taken on a daily basis to achieve weight loss.
Instead, stating “I have a goal to lose ## pounds, AND this is how I intend to do it…” will shift your mind into action mode. When you state your goals in this manner, the intention behind them will push you to make a plan and take action to achieve them.
When you set a goal, there are three steps involved:
With a weight loss goal, scheduling a doctor’s appointment, purchasing new walking shoes and cold-weather gear (or hot, depending on where you are!), and even buying a new water bottle are small actions you can take to start working your plan. Once you have the plan laid out and you know what to do each day, you simply have to do it. Whether it is running X number of miles per week (I prefer to go even smaller and define the number of minutes I will exercise each day), or drinking X ounces of water per day, whatever those necessary actions are, take them! Once you take action, you are on your way to achieving that goal!
When setting and working toward your goals, it is important to remember that big changes or accomplishments take time. Remember, Rome wasn’t built in a day. Neither is a new body, a business, a fitness level, or anything else. It is the day-to-day actions that lead to different habits that lead to big changes.
The biggest commitments we make are the ones we make to ourselves. Yet, they are usually the ones we let go of the quickest, likely because we don’t have a plan and we don’t have someone to help keep us accountable to ourselves. Don’t let yourself down in 2023. Set goals, make plans, take action, and let me help you along the way!
If you have big goals and dreams for 2023, but you aren’t sure how to reach them, I’d love to help you. My unique framework makes it simple to not only set your goals, but to create a plan and define the intentional actions you can take to reach them!
